Purported Contradictions in the Bible

I'm going to organize this by Book Name in the Bible.
All alleged Contradictions are taken from the '
Skeptics Annotated Bible' website.

Since most of those 'contradictions' are answered elsewhere, I am going to start by only addressing the ones that are not addressed on that site. If you need answers to the ones not addressed here, click on the link above and go to his site, and you should find a defense by drilling down through his links.

Work in Progress

This apologetic project is really a Work in Progress, Under Construction, as it were. So if you see large areas of unaddressed alleged contradictions, or entire books with no contradictions reported, it does NOT mean that there are no contradictions reported, or even that all contradictions are dealt with elsewhere, but that I haven't gotten that far yet.

Genesis

Alleged Contradiction:
The two contradictory creation accounts. Gen 1:1-2:3, Gen2:4-25

Alleged Contradiction:
How long did creation take? 1:3-2:3, 2:4
In the first passage, God creates the heavens and the earth in 6 literal days.
In the second passage, it states:
These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens.
Defense:
The reference here in the second passage to 'day' is figurative, obviously. The first passage refers to the days that God created each thing. In Genesis 2, God's purpose is to focus on the creation of Man. Gen 2:4 serves as a bridge between the first account of creation and the second (as cited in the first note, above).

The use of the word 'day' is a period of time. In the first passage, Young Earth Creationists (such as myself) cite the fact that God is specific 'Evening and morning, Yom' to reference ONE calendar day.

The same verbage is not used in the second passage, indicating a difference in perspective. This period of time, while still using the word Yom, refers to a longer period of time, as in 'back in the day when God created...' - We use this same device today (I just DID!).

Alleged Contradiction:
Were plants created before or after humans? 1:11, 2:4-7
First passage refers to the creation account. Plants on the third day, Man on the 6th day.
Second passage states '...And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground. '
Defense:
In this second passage, God is describing in detail how plants were watered, and that the soil was not tilled. The statement that is used here in the second passage refers to the plants of the field, that is, like wheat and other grains (literally 'shoot' or bush (i.e. full-grown plant), and herbs of the field, literally 'green' as in a tender stalk) meaning the same types of plants, or tender plants raised for food.

This is further clarified because the passage goes on to say the soil was not tilled yet (nobody was there to till it) whereas we can tell that wild plants do not require tilling, plants cultivated for food must be carefully handled, the soil tilled, the ground watered.

Honestly, no one would care at all if the ground were not tilled for grass, no one would do it for anything but food.

God is not saying here that the plants were not yet created but that no seed had been sown and cultivated for the purpose of eating.

Alleged Contradiction:
Did Lot's daughters think God had killed every man except Lot? 19:21-22, 30, 31
In the first passage, Lot went up through Zoar, to escape the wrath against Sodom and Gomorrah.
In the second passage, Lot's daughters state 'Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us.'

Defense:
Lot's Daughters knew that Zoar was spared, because they had passed through the town when Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed. That much is pretty obvious.

Why then would they reason amongst themselves that 'there is not a man in the earth'? Did they think God had destroyed every nation? Of course not. The term 'earth' here is 'erets' which means 'land', 'earth' 'nation' 'country' or 'wilderness'.

Lot had continued his flight, by fleeing from Zoar to the mountain, dwelling in a cave. His daughters could see that he was old and that they weren't getting any younger, nor was Lot showing any signs of returning to civilization. They had already lost their betrothed husbands to the destruction of Sodom.

This passage simply indicates that they reasoned that they were not going to get husbands through any action on Lot's part, nor were there any men around in the wilderness to marry, to carry on Lot's seed. So they took matters into their own hands.

IN 36:14, Esau had Korah by his concubine Aholibamah
In 36:15-16, Korah is born to Eliphaz, Esau's firstborn son.
Defense:
Names are a funny thing. Common names are even funnier. Was George Foreman the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or fourth son of George Foreman? ;-)
Korah was not an uncommon name in the Bible, and in this instance, it is certainly reasonable to assume that Korah Eliphaz's son was named after his uncle, Korah.

Alleged Contradiction:
Who brought Joseph into Egypt? 37:28, 37:36, 39:1
In Gen 37:28, The Midianites sold Joseph into Egypt.
In Gen 37:28, The Midianites sold Joseph to Ismaelites, who (in Gen 39:1) sold him to Potiphar.
Defense:
There really isn't a contradiction here. If the Midianites knew that the Ismaelites were headed to Egypt trafficking slaves, by selling him to them they were in essence 'selling him INTO Egypt'.

If they DIDN'T know, there's still no contradiction here - the first passage simply states the obvious end result, and the second passage goes into more detail. After all, wasn't it Joseph's BROTHERS that sold him into Egypt?

Alleged Contradiction:
How old was Benjamin when his clan migrated to Egypt? 44:20, 22

Alleged Contradiction:
Was Mahli the son of Levi? 46:11
Gen 46:11 (and several other passages listed on the site) name the sons of Levi as Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
Yet Ezra 8:18 is quoted as saying Mahli, son of Levi...
Defense:
Well, there's really two defenses here, without even digging deep into this -
1) The word 'ben' means FROM, or descended from. ALL of the Jews, and actually, ALL of the Muslims, too, call themselves the 'Sons of Abraham'. And so they are, for they are direct descendants.
2) The word Levi here is a name which can and has been used repeatedly. How common is the name 'John'? Is it a contradiction if John the Baptist was beheaded and yet records show that John the Divine was buried alive on the Isle of Patmos? No, of course not. All this to say that Levi could certainly refer to two different people, both of which would obviously have different progeny, direct or indirect.

Defense:
This is a critical 'hingepin' passage used to attack the credibility of Revelation and the bible as a whole.
The passage in Revelation concerns the 144,000 that will be converted to Christ of ALL the tribes of Israel.

So there are 2 problems introduced here.
1) What happened to Dan?? Is he 'disinherited' from being a tribe of Israel?
2) Why has Manassah been elevated to a full tribe of Israel? I thought Ephraim was the 'younger' who was blessed more than the 'elder'.

Let's take the second puzzle first (and word it differently) - Why was Manassah taken out from Joseph to be a tribe of his own?

Ok. One can reason that Ephraim was left in Joseph as an 'inheritor' of Joseph's status, a greater honor, for the Jews, than being elevated to a full tribe.

Now, tell me why Dan's been removed as a tribe here. Isn't this a contradiction?

Not necessarily. Let's be very careful here.
There are several possible explanations here, I have TWO I have not heard expounded elsewhere myself.
1) Dan was disinherited because of idolatry(Judges 18)
There isn't much support for this, especially in light of the fact that Ezekiel describes the new Jerusalem and gives Dan one of the Gates to the city.
2) Dan is the source of the AntiChrist and is disinherited (The snorting of his horses was heard from Dan - Jer 8:16)
Not much support here either, this one passage in Jeremiah is referring to Nebuchadnezzar coming with his army through the REGION of Dan. Also, Dan had already been taken to Babylon by this time, so the argument that Dan was in support of Nebuchadnezzar doesn't make sense.
3) (one of my own) - Dan is DEAD. The 144,000 are taken from the living only, of course.
This passage in Revelation is after many judgements and disasters, when many people are reported to have died. It is well within the realm of possibility that Dan was wiped completely out by one or more of these judgements. This would then require Israel to name a successor tribe to take his place. (On this earth, anyway)
4) (one of my own) - The 12 tribes are listed as GEOGRAPHICAL REGIONS.
DAN is the northernmost region of Israel, and is obviously the route of much conquest. Israel's borders have fluctuated quite a bit, and it is possible that geographically the area that was attributed to Dan could be occupied by another nation at the time of this passage.

Who was Moses' father-in-law? 2:18-21, 3:1, 4:18, 18:5
The passages cited reveal that Moses' father-in-law was called by 3 different names - Jethro, Reuel, and Hobab.
Defense:
All three names could be nicknames for Jethro. All 3 have different meanings:
Reuel - Friend of God. This man was considered a Priest of God. This name could also be a title.
Jethro - His Excellence. THis seems even MORE like a title. Jethro seemed almost a leader of the Midianites, because his advice to Moses seems wisdom supplied from years of delegation.
Hobab - Cherished. This seems like a familiar name, like Papa or Abba.

How many days is unleavened bread to be eaten during the Passover? 12:15
DEU 16:8 - 6 days
DEU 16:3, EXO 12:15, EXO 23:15 - 7 days

Defense:
Interesting to me that in the same passage, DEU 16:3, it says 7, then turns around in DEU 16:8 and says 6 days.
I have my suspicions that our answer will lie here, so lets examine the text there:
DEU 16:3 Thou shalt eat no leavened bread with it; seven days shalt thou eat unleavened bread therewith, even the bread of affliction; for thou camest forth out of the land of Egypt in haste: that thou mayest remember the day when thou camest forth out of the land of Egypt all the days of thy life.
DEU 16:4 And there shall be no leavened bread seen with thee in all thy coast seven days; neither shall there any thing of the flesh, which thou sacrificedst the first day at even, remain all night until the morning.
DEU 16:5 Thou mayest not sacrifice the passover within any of thy gates, which the LORD thy God giveth thee:
DEU 16:6 But at the place which the LORD thy God shall choose to place his name in, there thou shalt sacrifice the passover at even, at the going down of the sun, at the season that thou camest forth out of Egypt.
DEU 16:7 And thou shalt roast and eat it in the place which the LORD thy God shall choose: and thou shalt turn in the morning, and go unto thy tents.
DEU 16:8 Six days thou shalt eat unleavened bread: and on the seventh day shall be a solemn assembly to the LORD thy God: thou shalt do no work therein.
Taking the passage in context, we see here that God gave detail in verse 8. This passage explains that there is a difference on the seventh day, but that by no means precludes the consumption of unleavened bread.
The passage here clarifies that they were to eat unleavened bread on 6 days, and on the seventh day, there was to be a solemn assembly (wherein, one must understand, unleavened bread was to be eaten as commanded in verses 3 and 4.)

Where did Moses get water from a rock? 17:1-7
Two passages are cited here that appear to the reader to be at a difference:
EXO 17:1-7 - States that Moses struck the rock in the Wilderness of Sin
NUM 20:1-8 - States that Moses struck the rock twice, in the Desert of Zin.
While these names are similar, they do NOT refer to the SAME place.

Defense:
Well, let's start off by saying that there are several differences in these two passages.
In the first passage, God tells Moses to strike the rock, he DOES, and water pours forth. It's in the Wilderness of Sin.
In the second passage, God tells Moses to SPEAK to the Rock. Moses instead gets angry at the Congregation of Israel, and proclaims 'Must *WE* fetch you water from this rock'. It's in the Desert of Zin.

The differences here are because it is speaking of two different occurrances.
NOTE: here there is a stark contrast between these two passages: In the FIRST, Moses is obedient to God, and strikes the rock.

In the SECOND, Moses is DISOBEDIENT (God told him to SPEAK to the rock, but instead he STRUCK it again. Not only THAT, his words make it seem that he is claiming credit for the power to get water out of the rock.

God IMMEDIATELY Condemns Moses for his unfaithfulness, and Moses pays a high price, he is not allowed to enter into the promised land, but must die outside.

WHY would God want him to strike the rock one time, and SPEAK to the rock the next time?

Because there is eternal symbolism tied up in this passage. The rock is a symbol for Jesus, who was struck once for our transgressions.

Jesus did not have to die twice, only once. Though He was wounded for our transgressions, to obtain salvation, we merely must SPEAK to the Rock of Salvation.

Also, it is important to note here that Moses took credit for the event, when it is only the Power of God that can perform the Miracle, both of Salvation (the symbolism here) and of bringing water from the rock (the actual event here).

EXO 31:14 here is compared to EXO 31:14-15, and EXO 35:2, NUM 15:32-36
EXO 31:14 states that the soul should be 'cut off' from among his people. (exiled).
EXO 31:14, 31:15, 35:2, NUM 15:32-36 state he should be 'killed'.

Defense:
This confusion comes from a misunderstanding of the term 'cut off'.
There is no contradiction here, because the term 'cut off' (karath) is used in many passages to indicate a death sentence. In fact, the term 'cut off' meant to 'end their line', as was demonstrated against Achan when he took of the profane loot from Jericho, and his entire family was destroyed.

Alleged Contradiction:
Does God ever get tired? 31:17
Here ISA 40:28 is compared to EXO 31:17, ISA 1:14, ISA 43:24, JER 15:6
ISA 40:28 Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is he weary? God does NOT get weary.
EXO 31:17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed. God DOES get weary.
ISA 1:14 Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them. God DOES get weary.
ISA 43:24 Thou hast bought me no sweet cane with money, neither hast thou filled me with the fat of thy sacrifices: but thou hast made me to serve with thy sins, thou hast wearied me with thine iniquities. God DOES get weary.
JER 15:6 Thou hast forsaken me, saith the LORD, thou art gone backward: therefore will I stretch out my hand against thee, and destroy thee; I am weary with repenting. God DOES get weary.
Defense:
Well, God doesn't HAVE to take a break. He never gets tired. But He gets tired of our sin.
Is that a contradiction? Not at all.

The passages ISA 1:14, 43:24, and JER 15:6 refer to the weariness God feels, like a parent, in our backward and sinful unrepentant and mis-focused hearts.

The passage EXO 31:17 seems to indicate that God rested, or that He needed it, because He was refreshed. Just as in Genesis 1, it explains that God rested on the 7th day, here we are told that it is a covenant and a sign for us, (or at least for Israel) that we are to observe the Sabbath Day, to do no work in it.

People (you and I) need rest each week in order to recuperate from the labors of the week. This is true of animals and even the soil, it needs a rest from raising crops. Farmers for millennia have done this through crop or field rotation, but it's a natural state, just the way things are.

God RESTED on the seventh day, as an example for us to follow (by mandate, actually). The mandate, if I may be so bold as to guess the heart of God, is because
1) we must have time to stop and reflect on God, to focus on the source of our existence and provision.
2) We as humans tend to work others and take advantage of them. Without a mandated day of rest, we might either force others, or be forced, to work without a rest, until we are physically used up, dying many years earlier than is natural.

The statement that 'God was Refreshed' can apply as a further example, that this is our natural purpose in resting on the Sabbath day.
Alleged Contradiction:
Where did Moses receive the ten commandments? 31:18, 34:4, 34:32
In one set of passages, the bible refers to Mount Sinai. In the other, it refers to Horeb.
Defense:
Horeb is a generic form, according to Strong's Exhaustive Concordance, for the Mountain Range wherein lies Mount Sinai.
Some passages seem to name this, however, as the Mountain of God. Does this indicate that there could be a contradiction here?

No. There are often multiple names for locations, either through differences in Languages, or because one defines a region while the other describes something more specific.

As example of this, here in the United States one of our landmarks on the west coast is Mount Hood, so named by British Naval Lt. William E. Broughton, for the famed British Naval officer Alexander Arthur Hood. But this also has an Indian name, Louwala-Clough (Literally, 'smoking mountain'). It also has the name 'Rocky Mountains' because it belongs to that Range of Mountains. Another Native American tribe called this mountain 'Wy'East'. Lewis and Clark, upon seeing this mountain, named it 'Timm Mountain' until they learned it's 'proper name' from the British.

The word Horeb (Choreb) means 'desolate' and could be a description for this mountain, out in the arid Sinai peninsula wilderness that Moses wandered through on his escape from Pharoah. It could also be the Midianite name for this mountain.

Who made the ark of the covenant? 37:1
Here DEU 10:1-3 is compared to EXO 37:1
DEU 10:3 And I [Moses] made an ark of shittim wood, and hewed two tables of stone like unto the first, and went up into the mount, having the two tables in mine hand. Moses made the ark.
EXO 37:1 And Bezaleel made the ark of shittim wood: two cubits and a half was the length of it, and a cubit and a half the breadth of it, and a cubit and a half the height of it: Bezaleel made the ark.
Defense:
There is no contradiction here either.

Moses COMMISSIONED the ark. He could have made the ark himself, given enough time. But he was busy judging issues and leading. Of course it's understood he couldn't do everything himself.
This language is not used as often anymore. Now we use the 'past perfect tense', like 'I had a statue made for the hero' rather than saying 'I made a statue for the hero'.

However, sometimes we DO use this language, as in the case of when we 'give flowers' to a family at a funeral.
Most often, we have called in an order via phone or internet, and a delivery person actually did the 'giving'.

God instructed Moses to build the Tabernacle as well, from EXO 25-30. Yet Moses did not do all that work himself.

How should a man who has sex with a menstruating woman be punished? 15:24, 20:18
Here LEV 15:24 is compared to LEV 20:18
LEV 15:24 And if any man lie with her at all, and her flowers be upon him, he shall be unclean seven days; and all the bed whereon he lieth shall be unclean. He shall be unclean until evening.
LEV 20:18 And if a man shall lie with a woman having her sickness, and shall uncover her nakedness; he hath discovered her fountain, and she hath uncovered the fountain of her blood: and both of them shall be cut off from among their people. He and the woman shall be killed ('cut off').
Defense:
Permit me to be somewhat indelicate here...
Women do not always know even to the day, the time at which their cycle will start.
In the FIRST passage here (in context it is talking about issues of blood and uncleanness) it is talking about a man who DISCOVERS after he gets up in the morning, that the woman he was in the bed with (whether he had sex with her or no) has started her cycle, and the 'flower of her blood' is upon him and his clothes. He has not willfully sinned here, he has simply discovered that he is now unclean.

In the second passage (in context it is talking about sins concerning sex) it is talking about a couple who knowingly and willingly participate in consensual sex while she is on her cycle. God obviously does not stand for this.

Alleged Contradiction:
Who may offer sacrifices to God? 17:1-5
Here, LEV 17:1-5 is compared to 1SA 1:1-2, 1SA 7:7-9
Samuel was the son of an Ephrathite in Ephraim, and in 7:7-9, offers sacrifices in Mizpah.
Defense:
The Leviticus passage declares categorically that the tabernacle is where the blood offering is to be carried out, and only by the Levites.

This is because the temptation would come (and happened when Israel split into the land of Judah and the land of Israel) to make sacrifice in some more accessible place. Can you imagine having to go to another central city 150 miles away (by foot!) to worship?

Yet the nations that were there before Israel built altars and groves to worship in on practically every mountain and hill.

Whatever God's REASONS were, it was clear that He wanted the sacrifices to be done in Jerusalem at the temple.

So, is it a contradiction that Samuel (was he even a Levite?) made sacrifice in Mizpah? Why didn't God condemn him for this?

2 issues here: 1) was he a Levite? 2) why was he allowed to sacrifice in Mizpah?
Short answer - Levites were given NO land as an inheritance in the Kingdom of Israel. They lived in every town and village, in every district, and were given portions among all the different tribes through the tithe.

So, the fact that Samuel's daddy lived in Ephraim did not preclude him from being a Levite. However, the scripture declares that his dad was an Ephrathite, which indicates he was of the Tribe of Ephraim.

If he was of the progeny of Ephraim, would that make God a 'liar' if He allowed this child, who was dedicated by a devout woman (Hannah) to the service of the Lord, to become a Levite by adoption, or 'grafting' as it were?

I don't think so. Let's assume that the passage indicates he was of Ephraim, and that God allowed Samuel to be adopted into the service (for his life) of the Lord. I see no contradiction there.

As to the 2nd point, up until the time that Solomon built a 'permanent temple', the Tabernacle was a tent and was mobile. Scripture is not clear as to whether the tabernacle was moved to Mizpah or not, for this situation.

Not that any of that mattered, for the tabernacle had been abandoned in the time of the judges, and Israel had followed after Ashtaroth and Baal. Just as in the day of Elijah, the 'tabernacle' was not an option, for the ark was unavailable and the tabernacle had been abandoned.

Alleged Contradiction:
Should we love or hate other people? 19:17-18
Here LEV 19:17-18 is compared to LUK 14:26.
LEV 19:17-18 Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him. Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD. Love your neighbor as yourself.
LUK 14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. Hate your neighbor AND yourself.

Defense:
Well, on the surface this looks like a clear contradiction, but Jesus is discussing here the attitude of the heart compared to loyalty to Jesus.
The Greek word here means 'hate', 'detest', or 'love less'.

Many Christians are given the difficult choice of choosing between family members, even spouses, and their faith. In times of extreme persecution, as the early church would soon face (the ones He was admonishing), they would have to make a choice between faith and torture or death.

Here, Jesus is simply putting the early Disciples on notice that they would have to make that choice, that the choice was coming, and that they would have to choose to lose family, friends, spouses, and even their own lives for the Kingdom.

LEV 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. Kill Them.
1KI 15:11-12 And Asa did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, ... he took away the sodomites out of the land. Exile Them.
Defense:
Asa did not exile them. He killed them. The ones who didn't want to be killed probably fled, if they could.

The end result is that they were no longer in the land.

Where did Moses receive the ten commandments? 26:46, 27:34

Who was Moses' father in law? 10:28

Alleged Contradiction:
Was Moses meek? 12:3, 31:14-18
In the first passage, NUM 12:3, Moses, we are told is meekest of all on the earth.
In the second passage, NUM 31:14-18, Moses was wroth with the captains of Israel's army for keeping alive the women and children of the Midianites, whom he had instructed to avenge of the Lord. He had them slay every woman who had been with a man, and every male child.
Defense:
Let's start by saying that Moses had been instructed to carry out this little job, and then he would be killed. (God was going to slay him, in a ripe old age, around 120 or so.)
That kind of information would make anyone tense, perhaps a little more tense than usual.

Next, we know that Moses goes on to explain that these women caused Israel to stumble. God had told Abraham not to take even a shoestring of Sodom when he rescued Lot. We are unclear on the details in NUM 31:1 what God instructed Moses to do other than to tell the army to avenge Him of Midian. But Moses makes these instructions clear after the fact, as does Eleazar, in instruction on 'purifying' the spoil.

But let's examine this alleged contradiction under the rules of contradiction: Can Moses be both Meek, and also 'lose it' with his commanders?

Meekness is, by definition, NOT a wimpy doormat that allows everyone to run over him. It is defined as 'Strength Under Control'.

Moses was under control, even when upset with his commanders. It may have SEEMED out of control to order the slaughter of women and children, but it was simply following orders from God.

Jesus was also self-defined as meek, yet he was angry with the money changers and drove them from the temple with a whip.

Yet if Jesus WAS who He said He was, then He had to have had complete control on the cross, not to destroy everyone around in His suffering and agony, for He certainly had the power.

Alleged Contradiction:
Who wrote the Pentateuch? 12:3
Here, NUM 12:3 is compared with DEU 31:9, 1:1, 34:5-6, and 34:10
DEU 1:1 These be the words which Moses spake unto all Israel on this side Jordan in the wilderness. Moses wrote it.
DEU 31:9 And Moses wrote this law, and delivered it unto the priests the sons of Levi. Moses wrote it.
NUM 12:3 Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth. Moses didn't write it??
DEU 34:5-6 So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD. And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Bethpeor: but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day. Moses didn't write it.
DEU 34:10 And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face. Moses didn't write it.
Defense:
Let's start with the current reference - NUM 12:3. I actually can't understand what being meek would have to do with writing the book of the Law. (See definition of Meek above...

Ok, so let's look at DEU 1:1 and DEU 31:9. Do these two verses lay claim that Moses wrote the entire Pentateuch?
(GEN, EXO, LEV, NUM, DEU).
Actually, DEU 1:1 concerns itself with Moses' admonishment to Israel before the Jews crossed the Jordan. It may have been applied to the majority of DEU (specifically Chapters 1-28, where it changes tense) but certainly NOT to the other 4 books of the Pentateuch. Those were written during the 40 years in the wilderness, not 'dictated' or spoken in one sitting to the people.

DEU 31:9 is essentially a closure of the declaration which Moses spoke to the people before the crossing of the Jordan. It also relates to him delivering the LAW (Bound up essentially in the document Leviticus, but one might also extrapolate that he at the same time delivered GEN and EXO (History books) and NUM (Genealogical records) to them at the same time. It is possible that DEU was primarily written down by others while Moses spoke.
DEU 31:9 in no wise declares categorically that Moses delivered all 5 books intact (including a statement of his death and subsequent statement that no prophet has ever been raised up like him.)

From DEU 31 to DEU 34, it is unclear where any break occurred between one author and another. As I said earlier, DEU may have been dictated in majority, and addendums appended afterward. The final few verses of DEU appear to have been added much later, possibly as late as after the period of Judges and during the reign of David or Solomon.

I'll concede (for obvious reasons) that Moses did not write the last few chapters of DEU, but that in no wise raises up a contradiction concerning DEU 1:1, or DEU 31:9 (and NUM 12:3 doesn't even apply here!)

Here NUM 25:9 is compared to 1CO 10:8.
NUM 25:9 And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand. 24,000.
1CO 10:8 Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. 23,000
Defense:
There are 2 defenses for this alleged contradiction.
1) NUM 25:9 does not state how long it took anyone to die of the plague, though these judgemental plagues from God appear (in other passages and occurrances) to have been rather rapid. Still, we do not know how long it took for the plague to kill each person, or how much time passed before the Israelite came forward with the Moabite Princess.

So it's possible that 1CO 10:8 refers to the number that died in one day due to the fornication, and the 1000 additional fell after sundown (days were measured sundown to sundown) or before sundown (and the majority after sundown).

2) 1CO 10:8 does not specify anything at ALL in it's reference, except that:
...a)23,000 died from it in one day
...b)It was due to some fornication.
There is no mention in it of a plague at all.
This could actually be referring to an unrecorded event.

Did the Israelites kill every male in Midian? 31:7, 16-17
Here NUM 31:7, 16-17 is compared to JUD 6:1-2,5.
In the first passage, Moses is instructed by God to make war with the Midianites. They do so, and slay all the males, but capture all the women and children. In vv16-17, Moses has them slay the women who have been with a man, and all the male children. This logically would exterminate the Tribe of Midian, since the name would be carried through the males.

In JUD 6, The story of Gideon describes a period of 7 years or so where the Tribe of Midian causes Israel such vexation they must hide in caves to survive. Gideon's small army comes up against Midian, an army like grasshoppers, too many to number.

Defense:
NUM 6 goes on to describe the plunder after the battle, and describes how they wore gold earrings, in JUD 8:24. From this passage it becomes apparent that scripture is dealing interchangeably between 'Ishmaelites' and 'Midianites'.

I might also add that it's long been conjectured that Midian dwelt in the Sinai peninsula, whereas Gideon was battling 'armies from the eastern peoples' in JUD 8:10.
